Contingent Faculty Caucus

SPE's Contingent Faculty Caucus is an inclusive organization that supports and acknowledges all SPE members who are working on a contingent basis. Through activism and advocacy, the Contingent Faculty Caucus provides a supportive community and resources for the adjunct/contingent population within SPE; facilitates organized peer review processes for photographic work; provides support for job applications via the SPE Career Mentoring Initiative; encourages and facilitates support and inclusion of adjunct/contingent faculty from the LGBTQ, Multicultural, and Women's Caucuses; facilitates assistance with unionization via external union organizations and social movement initiatives; and strengthens an alliance between full time and contingent faculty, with the purpose of cultivating a unified faculty body within SPE.

Members include current adjunct and non-tenure track staff and faculty, graduate students, lecturers, researchers, and truly anyone who supports and advocates for the contingent educational community within SPE. SPE CFC members are not limited to current contingent faculty; full time and tenure-track faculty are welcome as our goal is to create a unified faculty body within SPE.

Who Are Contingent Faculty?

The term “contingent faculty” includes both part-and full-time faculty who are appointed off the tenure track. The term calls attention to the tenuous relationship between academic institutions and the part-and full-time non-tenure-track faculty members who teach in them. The term includes adjuncts, who are generally compensated on a per-course or hourly basis, as well as full-time non-tenure-track faculty who receive a salary.

What is the Contingent Faculty Caucus?

Contingent faculty face greater challenges in teaching and scholarship than ever before, and they are being asked to shoulder an increasing majority of the teaching load as full time positions continue to dwindle. Adjunct and contingent faculty now make up more than 70% of the higher education workforce. At first intended to bolster the ranks of academia, the adjunct workforce has become far from supplementary, and it is essential to the overall health and stability of higher education.

SPE CFC is an organization which facilitates a support community for contingent faculty. This support will assist adjuncts’ and other contingent faculty’s professional development, and will foster a healthy academic community by providing a cohesive network for those photographic educators without a primary home institution. SPE CFC is an inclusive organization that supports and acknowledges all SPE members who are working on a contingent basis. The organization is a community focused on creating a collaborative and healthy environment between full-time and contingent faculty in academia to support the world of photographic education.
